Reynols 30th Anniversary Exhibition
NewcastlE CONTEMPORARY ART, High Bridge Works, NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, 16th November – 16th December 2023

Reynols are an Argentinian experimental band that began in 1993 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Their musical output spans everything from cosmic free rock, lo-fi drone, and electronic music to conceptual sound art and socio-political observations.Reynols have worked with an open-process, DIY philosophy, amassing almost 80 albums to their name, toured the USA and EU, and have had multiple documentaries made about them, as well as collaborating with experimental artists such as Acid Mothers Temple and Pauline Oliveros.

Having been approached by founding member of the band Anla Courtis, Craig Stewart Johnson (Invisible City Records) and Andy Wood (TQ Zine) celebrated the 30th anniversary of the band with an exhibition of their work, following on from similar showcases in Belgium, Spain, USA and Japan.

This exhibition presented a range of archival documentation surrounding the band Reynols. The exhibit included gig posters, press clippings, photos, videos, and audio spanning their entire career. We are presenting physical artifacts from collectors and enthusiasts around the world, giving a glimpse into the unique and esoteric discography they have amassed.

Through the archival material, we looked to present the work of a band that has consistently striven to create free music in the purest sense. Embracing a DIY energy in all matters, their huge archive of material documents a band whose approach to creativity is singular in its expressiveness. Throughout their existence, they have advocated for an approach to inclusion, looking to make music accessible to people of all abilities, whether that be through workshops or collaborations, describing music itself as a fundamental civil right.

DESIRE LINES
Vane, Gateshead, 20th may 2023

‘DESIRE LINES’ was a group exhibition documenting the process of creating an exhibition as an artistic form. Drawing outwards from an initial meeting, artists record their experiences visiting Vane to capture, track and reflect upon this process. Trails of material emerge and dovetail, moving back and forth between Newcastle and Gateshead, and merge toward a collective assembly presented as part of The Late Shows on Saturday 20 May 2023.

NOTHING HERE NOW BUT THE SOUND(S) was a preparatory performance event that took place at Vane on 23 February 2023. Performances were captured by archivist David Howcroft, in addition to individual journeys to and from the gallery. The performance has been archived as part of ‘N-Aut’, in keeping with the process of the archival project. The journeys and a copy of the performance have been posted to musician Joe Murray to create a new sound work for ‘DESIRE LINES’ at The Late Shows.

The exhibition features connected and collaborative elements of sound installation and performance, accompanied by archival and visual works by Craig Stewart Johnson, David Howcroft, Eleanor Cully Boehringer, Graeme Hopper, Joe Murray and Jorge Boehringer. These artists are all active in the DIY experimental arts and music scene, occasionally referred to as the ‘no-audience underground’. This rhizomatic scene advocates improvisation, collaboration and an openness to experimental forms, characteristics which weave their way into the processes and work of ‘DESIRE LINES’.

OUR Lives, ephemera

Our Lives, Ephemera was a group show exhibiting the collage work of six artists whose visual arts practice has been uncovered through their activity within the no-audience underground.

The no-audience underground is a self-sustaining ‘sub-section of the noise and experimental music scene’1 where there are no passive audience members, only active participants. Within this rich network of practitioners, visual art practices coexist with sound arts, speaking a shared language of experimentation and abstraction.

The artists selected use a range of techniques and materials, demonstrating the varied aesthetic potential located within this artistic discipline where recontextualisation of existing materials into a new form is a key element of practice.
